A Hard Look at Times Editng in the Digital Era by Liz Spayd (the Public Editor), 2017

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/04/public-editor/a-hard-look-at-times-editing-in-the-digital-era.html

Layers of editing at NY Times:

  • Backfielder: rewrite, check sources, question facts, look for holes
  • Copy editor: adjust style, catch grammar and typos, rework for clarity
  • Slot (head of the copy desk): Reviews, changes headlines as needed, may send to website or to print
  • News Desk: For larger, more significant stories, the News Desk reviews next. Sometimes forwards to the head of the Foreign section or the paper's top editors.
