Abstract: The weakness of the print-based bibliographic instruction model is its focus on format of the information source over the type of information the source contains. Drawing from the critical literacy movement in the education literature, this article presents an example of a critical information literacy model as applied to the research paper component of a first-year composition course. In this model, students work from their own experiences as they are prepared to make predictive judgments about the information they will need.

Abstract: The need for information literacy in the curriculum has been recognized in several educational and workforce standards. These standards present a prescribed view of information literacy that emphasizes the economic need but undervalues the social nature of information and the experience students possess as information users. Theorists and educators within the higher education literature have developed a critical pedagogical approach to education that draws on theorist Paulo Freire and a social reconstructionist view of the curriculum. A critical pedagogical approach to information literacy seeks to counter the mechanistic view of information literacy offered by the standards. This approach seeks to understand information as a social construct and engage students in the educational process, ultimately, making information literacy more vital to the curriculum. A Critical Information Literacy Model: Library Leadership within the Curriculum by Troy A. Swanson, this is an unpublished manuscript that I had been playing with in 2004. I have no plans to submit this for publication.
Abstract: It is a time for a new model for teaching students to find, evaluate, and use information by drawing on critical pedagogy theory in the education literature. This critical information literacy model views the information world as a dynamic place where authors create knowledge for many reasons, seeks to understand students as information users, and emphasizes that information “evaluation” is a continual process during research. This model centers libraries within the curriculum as the experts on overcoming many of the obstacles to conducting successful research in the ever-changing information world.
