Looking to the Future: Implementing Blogs in a Community College Library by Troy A. Swanson Internet Reference Services Quarterly Volume: 11 Issue: 3 Cover Date: 2006 55-65

Web logs, or blogs, have transformed the Moraine Valley Community College Library’s Web site. Thanks to a partnership with the Metropolitan Library System, the college’s regional library system, the Moraine Valley Library has been able to implement a series of blogs that weave ever-changing content, created by all of the college librarians, in strategic locations within the site. As the Web has become the central access point to all information, including print, library users expect more out of the local library Web site. Not only should a library Web site be a list of useful research tools such as the local OPAC or subscription databases, but the library Web site should include the value-added services provided by the reference librarians. The use of blogs and RSS technology represents a first step toward the collaborative reference tool of the future (Fitcher, 2005). This tool integrates a range of information resources with librarian knowledge in a flexible, searchable delivery mechanism.
